Can I fill out the FAFSA before I’ve been accepted to the college I’m applying to?

I’m am working on my transfer application to UNC Asheville for the Fall 2011 semester. I just have the writing and and an arts supplement to complete. I know that the FAFSA is now available to be filled out. Can I fill it out now, even if I have not been accepted to the university? Or is it best to get it done now? Thank you.
Okay, I’m confused. Is the FAFSA available now, or on January 1st? I had originally thought it was the first, but the website says it’s available now…
